Dream for the adaptive reuse of the Ismaili Jamatkhana
Updated: May 25, 2022
The old 1928 Mosque in Marabastad – South Africa’s first Ismaili Jamatkhana Mosque – is a
historical building that warrants preservation. At the same time, it is a physical asset that
can contribute to the present and future of this historical urban neighbourhood. This proposal seeks to imagine the remodelling of the decommissioned Mosque into The
Marabastad Hub, to function as a vibrant space for re-membering past, present and future:
archiving Marabastad’s history, connecting key stakeholders in conversation, imagining and
incubating a transformed future, serving the local community through a health clinic and
community advice office, and functioning as an urban classroom for students from a range
of disciplines. In doing the above, we propose building on the memory and values of how the facility was used in the past, and remodelling it as a gift for the present and future.
